DHS S&T Emeritus Center of Excellence

In April 2004, the Institute for Infectious Animal Diseases (IIAD) was designated as a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Center of Excellence in an effort to protect the nation’s agriculture and public health sectors against high-consequence, emerging and zoonotic disease threats.

Though the Institute’s time as a Center of Excellence ended in 2017, IIAD continues to work closely with DHS and currently serves as a DHS Emeritus Center of Excellence.

Past Performance as a DHS Center of Excellence

The Institute co-led the Center of Excellence for Zoonotic Disease Defense (ZADD) along with the Center of Excellence for Emerging and Zoonotic Animal Diseases (CEEZAD), located at Kansas State University.

Together, the Centers advanced the development of:

• Next-generation vaccine candidates, vaccine platforms and adjuvants against high-consequence animal and zoonotic diseases.
• Decision support systems and emergency management tools to support prevention and control of and recovery from high-consequence animal and zoonotic diseases.
• Integrated educational and training programs for the next generation of professional to work in disciplines that research, support and respond to transboundary, emerging, and zoonotic diseases.
